Through the study of history we aim to develop an understanding of the world we live in and how the past has helped to shape the modern world. Using a wide variety of resources and evidence, including film, textbooks, internet research, paintings, photographs, popular music, and newspapers we aim to develop an improved understanding of the past and present.

History is a useful vehicle for stimulating and developing a range of cognitive skills: using evidence, assessing reliability, debating, discussing, formulating arguments, and developing chronological understanding; important skills which are transferable, not only academically - supporting the Sciences, English and Mathematics – but in a wide range of careers.

Course overview

Throughout their schooling here at Lakelands, students are encouraged to produce work in a variety of formats e.g. essays, projects, presentations and models. The use of ICT is encouraged for students to research and produce work.

In Years 7 to 9 all students follow a programme of study covering a variety of topics.

In Year 7 we explore Medieval History, 1066-1500 including:  'Why do we remember 1066?', 'The Feudal System: Who was really in charge?', the Crusades, and The ‘Black Death'.

In Year 8 we study Early Modern History, 1500-1750, including: 'The Tudors and the Stuarts – a Religious and Political rollercoaster', The British Civil Wars, and The Transatlantic Slave Trade and its repercussions.

In Year 9 we study the Industrial and Modern Age, 1750-present, including: the history of Britain from 1750-present. This focusses on Britain’s industrialisation, the campaign for universal suffrage (including a depth study on the Suffragettes), WW1 and WW2, the Cold War, the rise of terrorism and ‘The British Empire – a source of pride or shame?' This year includes case studies on each of Jack the Ripper and the Assassination of JFK.

At Years 10 and 11 students study 4 key topics: 'Crime and Punishment through time, 1000-present', ‘Henry VIII and his Ministers, 1509-40', 'Weimar and Nazi Germany, 1918-39', and 'Superpower Relations and the Cold War', as part of the Edexcel GCSE course.
