Course overview

In Key Stage 3 all students will investigate a wide range of artists, crafts people and designers.  They will develop practical knowledge about the art process and different contexts. Pupils will be able to explore a range of drawing and mark making techniques as well as experimenting with a variety of materials and techniques.  They will acquire the skills of researching contextual sources, as well as presenting their findings.  Pupils will have opportunity to generate ideas that are developed and refined incorporating the techniques that have been acquired from other artists.  Allowing pupils to creatively respond making through drawings, painting, mixed-media and 3D outcomes. Through this creative process, pupils will analyse and evaluate their work and that of others.  

In Year 10 and 11 students can study GCSE Art and Design: Fine Art.  The course equips pupils to explore and develop a broad range of practical knowledge and understanding.  A series of mini projects and activities allow them to experiment and express their own ideas, creativity and imagination. Pupils will start their component one portfolio responding to a variety of briefs in years 10 and 11.  Pupils will go to galleries and visits to source inspiration as well as exploring a selection of artists, designers and crafts people. As a response to these stimuli, pupils will develop your own ideas and create personal artwork. This could be drawing, photography, mixed-media, painting, printing or other media that you choose. The portfolio is required to meet all four assessment objectives.

Component two requires pupils to complete an external set assignment from OCR. One theme is selected from the choice of five.  Pupils will be expected to develop their ideas through preparation, experimentation, and research. Pupils will produce an outcome within a ten – hour supervised assessment.
