Course Overview
In Key Stage 3 all students learn about where food comes from, food preparation and cooking and nutrition. Students will also learn about the importance of a healthy and varied diet, how to taste and cook a broader range of ingredients and recipes, accounting for a range of needs, wants and values. They will understand how to store, prepare and cook food safely and hygienically. Students will develop a range of general practical skills including to be able to safely prepare a wide range of ingredients. They also will be shown how to safely be able to operate the cooker and basic equipment. This will allow students to utilise these techniques to prepare, cook and combine different ingredients to create a selection of sweet and savoury food.
Food PrepAration & Nutrition
In Year 10 and 11 students can study GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition. The course focuses on the practical application of food knowledge, developing preparation and cooking skills and nutrition. The course have five main areas; food, nutrition and health, food science, food safety, food choice and food provenance. The course focusses on 12 key skills that allows students to produce complex dishes. From filleting fish, portioning chicken to making fresh pasta and a range of different pastries; students will cook a variety of sweet and savoury products. They will also take part in the Rotary Young Chef Award where they are expected to produce a healthy two course meal which develops designing and presentation skills. GCSE Food prepares students to take higher level courses or for entering the world of work. There are many careers available within the food industry from becoming a chef in the catering trade to food scientists and nutritionists.
GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition has two different forms of assessment. There is written exam which is made up of multiple choice questions worth 10% and 5 written questions containing parts worth 40%. The written paper is completed in one, 1 hour 45 minutes exam and accounts for 50% of the GCSE grade.
